SUMMARY
Artera is looking for a collaborative, empathetic, and growth-minded Engineering Manager to lead our product team, ReferRum, in Hungary. This team is responsible for building the patient data and referral infrastructure that powers critical functionality across the Artera platform—including patient communication preferences, referral insights, visit history, and contact data. Think of it as a CRM for patients—but smarter and more deeply integrated into healthcare delivery.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a highly skilled team of engineers, helping them grow and stay engaged while collaborating cross-functionally with product, design, and other engineering teams across the US and Hungary. We're not looking for someone to write code daily, but you should be technically proficient and comfortable participating in code reviews, design discussions, and supporting your team in making high-quality technical decisions. Whether you've formally managed people or acted as a team lead, we're looking for a servant leader who wants to help others grow while continuing to evolve their own leadership toolkit.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers in building reliable, scalable, and performant patient data services.
  • Facilitate an inclusive, high-performing, and psychologically safe team environment where talent does their best work.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to plan, scope, and deliver high-impact features.
  • Drive agile rituals including standups, sprint planning, and retros, and support the team’s velocity and delivery consistency.
  • Participate in and facilitate technical discussions, code reviews, and architecture planning to ensure engineering excellence.
  • Promote continuous improvement and personal development through thoughtful feedback, coaching, and 1:1s.
  • Own performance evaluations, team health assessments, and ongoing career development conversations.
  • Bring structure, clarity, and purpose to team operations while helping engineers navigate change and ambiguity.
  • Contribute to engineering management best practices across the broader Artera organization.
  • Champion Artera’s mission and values while modeling servant leadership and growth mindset.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on development and technical problem-solving.
  • 2+ years of experience leading engineering teams, with direct responsibility for delivery, prioritization, and team operations.
  • Proven ability to manage and improve engineering processes, ensuring consistent quality, effective on-call participation, and adherence to SLAs.
  • Demonstrated success in triad collaboration with Product and Design counterparts, including joint strategic planning, execution, and success metrics tracking.
  • Experience in technical leadership and mentorship, including facilitating growth for high-performing engineers and supporting a psychologically safe and feedback-rich environment.
  • Ability to drive clarity and execution, including breaking down complex problems, communicating risks, and keeping stakeholders aligned and informed.
  • Strong communicator who can effectively manage cross-functional relationships and advocate for resources to support project and team success.

BONUS

  • Experience working with or building patient data systems, CRMs, or communication platforms.
  • Familiarity with Artera’s tech stack: NodeJS, TypeScript, React, GraphQL, PostgreSQL.
  • Previous experience partnering with distributed and cross-functional teams across time zones.
